Mise-en-scene: Stranger Things Analysis
Costume
From the character's costume, as audience, we can connote that it is true to the period it is set in. The characters wear 80's fashion and their clothes also represent what type of character they are. In this sense, in the first 8 minutes the boys are wearing vintage, childish clothing whilst playing a role play game which suggests they are young.
Lighting
As the boys leave the house, we can denote Mike standing outside on his porch and his landscape lighting flickering then turning back on. Shortly after we can see when the characters leave the house, it is dark and the only light in the scene is the bike's headlight. Will's headlight flickers which may foreshadow danger. When Will is in his shed we can see him running from a pitch black house to his lit shed which we can infer from that Will is comfortable in his shed and feels safe and secure there. We can see a close-up of his light bulb, which turns bright.
Setting
From the setting of the show, the audience can connote the show is likely to be either sci-fi since it begins in a laboratory. The darkness in the corridor may also connote danger. The fast changes of setting also may suggest multiple things are occurring at the same time.
